CURRENT SCOUTING NOTES

6/2/04:  Soybeans VE.  33.5 ac. of beans planted on sod. 76.5 ac. beans planted on cornstalks.  Sod was burned off this spring and chisel plowed, then planted to 30 inch rows.  Emergence of beans not good because the moisture was worked out of the sod and some of the beans laid in dry dirt.  Emergence of beans in cornstalk field was good.  No insects were detected or found.

6/7/04:  Soybeans VC.  No insects reported.  Beans are coming along good in the part of the field that was sod.  I saw some damage to the stems at the ground level scattered throughout the sod field but have not been able to determine the cause.  Brome & alfalfa coming in the sod.  Some small broadleaf and grass just starting throughout the field.

6/15/04:  Soybeans V2.  Beans look good but the volunteer brome & alfalfa should be sprayed now.  No obvious insect damage in soybeans planted on sod.

6/24/04.  Soybeans V4.  No insects found.  Very little bacterial leaf blight.  Weed control good on the part of the field that was corn in '03.  Question on control of brome on the part of the field that was sod.

7/2/04.  Soybeans R1.  No insects found.  Very little leaf feeding.   Weed control excellent.  Beans flowering.  Brome control on ground that was sod is very good.

7/7/04.  Soybeans R2.  1 bean leaf beetle per 100 feet of row.  Very few small grasshoppers.  Weed control excellent.

7/12/04. Soybeans R2.  No insects found.  Some bacterial leaf blight on top leaves.  Should be sprayed within the next week - Volunteer Roundup corn, black nightshade, lambsquarter, velvet leaf, pigweed, and some grass.

7/20/04.  Soybeans R1.  No insects found.  Has been sprayed 2nd application Roundup 7-15-04.  Weeds and volunteer corn dying.  A lot of bacterial blight.

7/30/04.  Soybeans R3.  No insects found.  The field has adequate moisture.  Yield potential above average.  Most signs of blight that we observed earlier has vanished.

8/5/04.  Soybeans R3.  An occasional bean leaf beetle or grasshopper but not enough to count.  Weed control good.  Beans are quite big and look good.

8/11/04.  Soybeans R4.  No soybean aphids or no bean leaf beetles.  Field is clean of weeds.  Yield potential looks good.

8/19/04.  Soybeans R5.  Could not find even one aphid.  A lot of grasshoppers on end rows.  Weed control good.  Beans looking good.
