Welcome to the ISA On-Farm Network-Field Scouting project. Here you will find weekly field scouting reports from more than 200 corn, soybean and alfalfa fields around Iowa. Forty-one agronomists and crop advisors drawn from the membership of the Iowa Independent Crop Consultants Association (IICCA), ISU extension, and Agri-business have agreed to visit the same fields at least once a week throughout the growing season. Their findings will appear here as soon as they are submitted, giving you up-to-the minute insect and disease information for those sites.
 Week 16 | August 15 -21

Corn rootworm beetles are everywhere, on ear tips, in soybean fields, and even in alfalfa fields.

High numbers of aphids have been seen (and treated) around the state, but especially across the northern half of Iowa.

Spider mites have been a problem in the dry areas of southeastern Iowa, where a side benefit of treating for spider mites was early eradication of aphids.

Western Bean Cutworm larvae are being reported in corn fields feeding on ears in greater numbers than expected by the numbers of WBCW egg masses reported, pointing out the difficulty of effective WBCW egg mass scouting.

Soybean growth stages range from R4 to R7.

Corn growth stages range from R3 to R5.

Besides insect and disease information, in future years scouts will also provide ongoing information on ISA On-Farm Network strip tests being conducted at some of the locations.

The National Soil Tilth Lab, Deere & Company, and the Iowa Soybean Promotion Board are jointly funding this project, with additional matching funds from the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship.
