Why Water Quality Monitoring?

Water quality monitoring can show if water is safe for swimming, fishing, or drinking. Anyone can monitor water quality, and utilities, universities, public agencies, watershed organizations and even individual citizens are monitoring water in many places for its chemical, physical, and biological properties.

At the Iowa Soybean Association, we monitor water quality as part of our efforts to help farmers determine how to maintain a high level of agricultural performance while achieving state and federal water quality objectives in Iowa sub-watersheds.

Data and information better enable us to answer fundamental questions such as:
  • What is the condition of the water?
  • Is water-quality trending better or worse?
  • How can water-quality goals and standards be met?
  • Can changes in farm management affect water quality?

Having data in hand will enhance our ability to achieve real environmental gains while making the best use of the limited resources available for water quality monitoring.
